ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT 2007

The season for photographing butterflies, dragonflies and moths is now drawing to a close and the next update for the photogallery will probably not take place until the New Year. It therefore seems an appropriate time to give a progress report for our viewers and readers.

Considering the small size of our team I think what we have achieved in the space of less than a year is nothing short of astonishing. It was our aim at the start of the year simply to get the site designed and built. This we have achieved and, apart from the format of the magazine and the tours section, its appearance is now set. We hope that you approve but will always be open to comments and suggestions.

Having built the site we felt the first priority should be to get as many images as possible onto the photogallery. This is where, in my opinion, we have succeeded beyond all expectations. It has taken a great deal of generosity from our photographers and many hours of tedious editing and legend-writing by myself. However, I think the results speak for themselves and I hope you are enjoying the fruits of our labours. In all we have amassed a library of over 1,350 images comprising all of the 112 species and subspecies of British and Irish butterflies, 134 species of Mainland European butterflies, 31 species of British dragonflies, 320 species and subspecies of British birds, 104 species of British moths and 28 species of orchids.

In the coming year we intend to expand the collection of wild flower images to cover families other than just the orchids. As one might imagine, this is going to be a major task and so we ask for your patience.

I am aware of the many typographical errors that are present in the text. These are the result of the haste with which the site was put together and the lack of editing at the early stages. Over the coming winter the whole site will be edited thoroughly and errors corrected. I take full responsibility for the inclusion of these mistakes and they in no way reflect the abilities of the other members of our team.

The Taylor-made Tours are presently being designed and, now that my hectic field season is all but over, these will head my list of priorities. Roland and I are still making adjustments to the format of this section but we now feel that we are almost there. I am aiming to publish the itineraries by January.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

I am delighted to announce the imminent publication of my next two books.

Many of you will have been amused (and some horrified) by reading about my bird twitching antics in Arrivals and Rivals: a Birding Oddity. A second edition is being prepared with a new cover, some new photographs and an extra chapter outlining my quest over the last four years to photograph all of the British and Irish butterflies. This is due for publication at the end of October.

I am very excited about the publication of my book British and Irish Butterflies. Species and Subspecies: the Complete Field, Identification and Site Guide as it might be described as my ‘life’s work’. It contains photographs of all the species, subspecies and common forms, extensive notes on identification and behaviour and detailed information on where and when to see the butterflies throughout the British Isles. It is the culmination of nearly forty years of study and four years of full-time field work and preparation. It is due for publication at the end of October and I hope that you find it informative and useful.

Finally, I take this opportunity to thank our team members for their enthusiasm and support. Enterprise io would not be the wonderful resource that it is without your individual contributions. I also thank the many people that have visited our site and passed on their compliments and constructive criticisms.

Adrian Riley
